What is a Deacon?
With a group of any size naturally comes a great deal of work, often done behind the scenes. The New Testament term deacon comes from a word that literally means “servant” or “support.” In Acts 6:1-6, men were selected by the church in Jerusalem to make sure that the ongoing physical needs of the group were met. Elders, aided by deacons – men who meet particular God-given qualities and are chosen to fill various roles of service – became the pattern in churches throughout the New Testament (1 Timothy 3:8-13). Our deacons are an important part of our work and growth as a local church.
